All good things must come to an end—unless you’re talking about your Botox results. Over time, botulinum toxin is naturally removed from the body, so results don’t last forever. If you want your results to stick around indefinitely, you’ll need to receive occasional retreatment.
How often do you need a Botox touch-up?
What Is Botox?
Botox is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments with millions of treatments performed annually in the U.S. Botox targets a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle. This type of wrinkle is formed when facial movements or expressions push and pull on the skin, creating lines and creases. Wrinkles that form when you squint, smile, laugh, or scowl are examples of dynamic wrinkles.
Botox is versatile and can be used on many areas of the face. At Keys Med Spa, we use Botox to smooth many facial wrinkles, including:
- Crow’s Feet
- Lines Between the Brows
- Forehead Wrinkles

Why Does Botox Wear Off?
Botox is an injected neuromodulator. It works by disrupting the communication between muscles that cause wrinkles and nerves. Since muscles contract when they receive signals from nerves, halting this communication relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkling, allowing the skin to return to a smoother and more youthful appearance.
The medication that causes this relaxation eventually wears off. When this occurs, the nerves are once again able to signal the facial muscles to contract. Wrinkles eventually return.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Botox results will eventually wear off, but for most patients, this process takes time. We typically recommend that patients come in every 3-4 months for a Botox touch-up. As you use Botox more frequently, results may last longer between treatment sessions.
Regular retreatment ensures that results don’t wear off and fade.
What Happens When Botox Wears Off?
When your Botox wears off, you’ll still look like you. Wrinkles will slowly come back, eventually returning to their pre-treatment appearance. Some people say that wrinkles look worse than they did after Botox, but this isn’t true. Wrinkles return to their former appearance, although you may notice them more.
Can I Maintain My Botox Results?
Botox wears off 3-4 months after treatment, but if you love your results, you can help them stick around. Retreatment with Botox can extend the results, allowing patients to enjoy consistent and long-lasting results from treatment.
Maintaining Botox results is simple. Patients return to Keys Med Spa every few months for a quick touch-up injection.
What Happens During a Botox Touch-Up?
A Botox touch-up treatment is very similar to an initial Botox treatment. You’ll meet with your injector and talk about treatment goals. When you’re ready, we’ll cleanse the skin and administer several quick injections to key areas of the face.
The injection process is fast, and most patients are ready to return to work, school, or home within 30 minutes. Rest and relaxation aren’t needed. Patients can immediately resume their daily activities with few restrictions.
