Micro-Doses of Botox® Provide Up-Close Improvement of Facial Skin

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the U.S. and here at Keys Med Spa in Key West, FL.  While this treatment has been popular for decades for smoothing large wrinkles and creases around the eyes, recent innovations in injection techniques have brought new, exciting uses to this popular cosmetic treatment. Micro-doses of Botox injected superficially into the skin may dramatically improve its appearance.

What Are Micro-Doses of Botox?

Micro-dosing Botox is a new technique for administering Botox that was introduced in the November 2020 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Alberto Diaspro, MD of the Rigeneralab Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Turin, Italy, and his colleagues developed a technique where hundreds of small Botox injections are administered into the skin’s top layers using a grid-shaped pattern. In an early report, this technique appears to offer a 20% increase in skin texture and pore size.

This new method of administering Botox is called the “Microbotulinum” injection technique. The developing surgeons report that the new approach is less invasive than a traditional Botox treatment while providing objective results and high patient satisfaction levels.

How “Microbotulinum” Injections Are Administered

A typical Botox treatment administers small quantities of Botox to specific facial muscles that are associated with facial wrinkles. These injections temporarily relax the muscles, allowing the wrinkles to fade over time. Treatment is focused on particular treatment zones, not the entire face.

Microbotulinum injections are administered differently. Tiny Botox injections are placed just under the skin’s surface in a 1 cm grid pattern that extends across the entire face from forehead to cheek to jawline. This specialized administration pattern targets the superficial fibers of facial muscles, loosening them from the skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Rather than providing targeted improvement to specific muscles, the micro-dosing technique improves the entire face.

Like traditional Botox treatments, this new micro-dosing technique offers temporary results, usually lasting about 120 days per treatment.
