If living in Key West has taken its toll on your skin and you have sun damage, IPL is one of our favorite treatment options. Keep reading to learn more about IPL in Key West or call our office at (305) 587-9183 to schedule your first treatment.
What Is IPL?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. This treatment uses a principle called photothermolysis to improve the skin. Light and heat target and destroy the dark pigment in the skin and skin irregularities. These destroyed skin cells are naturally eliminated by the body after treatment, and the body is stimulated to produce new skin and molecules such as collagen that help re-establish your youthful skin tone.
We use the Lumecca IPL device at our practice. After carefully considering all the available options, Dr. Peterson selected the latest Lumecca device for its advanced technology and impressive results. This device is more powerful than standard IPL devices, delivering three times more energy to discolored skin. More power means faster results and fewer treatments. Most patients will see a dramatic change in their skin’s appearance after only two treatments, compared to between three and five treatments necessary with other devices. This device also has a large spot size that allows us to treat large areas quickly and comfortably.
What Can IPL Treat?
IPL is especially effective at treating sun damage and vascular skin conditions like spider veins and rosacea. If you have any of the following skin concerns, ask us if this treatment may be right for you:
- Sun damage
- Age spots
- Spider veins
- Rosacea
- Poikiloderma
- Freckles
IPL is typically used on the face, but if you have sun damage on other areas (like the chest, neck, or hands), IPL can be used on other areas too.
Recovery After IPL in Key West
Why is IPL such a popular option for sun damage? Recovery after this treatment is much easier than many other options for treating sun damage. No downtime is required after an IPL treatment at our medical spa. Patients can return to work immediately.
Redness is common after IPL, similar to the appearance your skin may have after too much time in the sun. This redness can be covered with makeup, but if you’re concerned, you can schedule your treatment for the end of the week. After a few days of recovery, redness is significantly reduced and the skin appears brighter and more refreshed. Dark spots on the skin may temporarily darken after an IPL treatment. This darkening is a sign that your treatment is working. Within a few days, these dark spots will flake off to reveal brighter skin underneath.
Is IPL Right for Me?
If you have sun-damaged skin, you may be a good candidate for IPL. In sunny Florida, most of our patients have gotten too much sun and can benefit from this powerful treatment.
