Botox is administered by injection, so you will feel a quick prick. Most patients aren’t overly bothered by this and find the treatment very tolerable. If you’re sensitive to injections or are worried about the process, let Dr. Peterson know. We can use a topical anesthetic if needed, although this can make the treatment take a bit longer. Discomfort during recovery is reported as minimal by most patients.

Botox Cosmetic recovery after your treatment will look much like any regular day. You can go to work and complete other daily activities with few restrictions. You may have a bit of tenderness, but this rarely interferes with life. Most patients experience some toxin effects, like bruising, redness, or mild flu symptoms. These peak in the first day or two and fade quickly.

While uncommon, other side effects may include blurred vision, double vision, drooping eyelids, problems swallowing, or breathing problems. If you experience any unusual side effects, please contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Most of our patients are good candidates for this wrinkle-reducing treatment, including frown lines and crow’s feet. Serious side effects are very rare but may include breathing problems, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, problems swallowing, and mild flu-like symptoms. Work with a skilled injector like Dr. Peterson to minimize the chances of a post-treatment complication.

Some patients experience bruising after botulinum toxin treatments. You can reduce the chances and severity of bruising by avoiding prescription drugs and over the counter medicines that thin the blood (including aspirin and ibuprofen). Icing the area for 10 minutes several on treatment day can also reduce post-treatment bruising and swelling.

Botulinum toxin is marketed under several FDA approved brand names, including Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Myobloc, Daxxify, and Letybo. These products come from two different toxin types: botulinum toxin type A (used in Botox, Jeuveau, Xeomin, Dysport, and the newer Daxxify and Letybo) and botulinum toxin type B (used in Myobloc). In medical settings, they’re used in carefully controlled doses for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. Importantly, these products are not interchangeable. Each has its own dosing requirements, so treatment with one brand can’t simply be swapped for another.

Yes. While Botox has been available the longest, some other FDA approved botulinum toxin products are relatively new to the market: Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA) was approved for medical use in the U.S. in September 2022, and Letybo (letibotulinumtoxinA) followed with approval in February 2024. Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine injected into muscles to treat various conditions and has been available for longer.

Beyond smoothing wrinkles like frown lines or crow’s feet, Botox has a range of cosmetic uses, including facial contouring, brow lifts, softening strong jawlines, and correcting gummy smiles. The cosmetic use of other botulinum toxin products became widespread after the FDA approved Botox Cosmetic in 2002 specifically for treating glabellar lines (the vertical lines between the eyebrows).

Results appear gradually, smoother wrinkles are usually visible within three to five days after injection, with the maximum effect typically seen about a week later. For glabellar lines specifically, results generally last two to four months, though some patients experience effects of botulinum toxin for six months or longer.

FDA-approved Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While it’s considered safe in a clinical setting, it’s not recommended for certain individuals, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have neurological diseases like myasthenia gravis, or have active skin infections at the planned injection site. Patients with muscle or nerve conditions may also be at increased risk of serious side effects, and those with certain nerve disorders may be more prone to cornea problems. It’s important to inform your provider of all prescription drugs you’re taking, especially blood thinners, before botulinum toxin treatment to minimize risk of allergic reactions or other side effects. Your provider will help you determine when you should reach out for medical help.

Side effects of botulinum toxin products can range from mild to serious. Some patients experience loss of strength, general muscle weakness, vision problems, drooping eyelids, or dizziness within hours to weeks of injection. Botox can also lead to bronchitis or upper respiratory tract infections, particularly in adults with prior breathing-related issues. The FDA has issued warnings that botulinum toxin can potentially spread beyond the injection site, causing paralysis of unintended muscle groups. In rare and serious cases, this can lead to respiratory arrest and death, especially when injected into critical muscle groups. Serious and/or immediate allergic reactions have also been reported with Botox and Dysport, which can show up as hives, itching, wheezing, or swelling of the face and throat. Your provider will help you determine when you should reach out for medical help.

Yes. Patients treated with Botox for overactive bladder control may experience urinary retention and could need self-catheterization afterward. For this reason, Botox isn’t recommended for those with a urinary tract infection or anyone unable to empty their bladder on their own.

Aftercare is fairly simple but important: avoid lying down for at least 4 hours and avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours following treatment.
